Getting Dianna to agree to the paternity test proved as difficult as I expected. So was the conversation I had with my mama about Dianna’s claim.

Mama, always a Texas lady with that core of solid steel most men couldn’t match, simply nodded and then pulled me in for a hug. I rested my head against her shoulder and closed my eyes. I’d missed my family while I was away.

“Is this…situation why you left so suddenly?” Mama asked.

I took a deep breath. “Yes.”

Mama pursed her lips in that way: the one that meant she had thoughts she wouldn’t express about Dianna. Probably my actions, too.

“And she told you before the baby was her new boyfriend’s?”

“Yes, Mama.”

“Well, the first important detail is to find out what father is listed on the birth certificate,” Mama said.

I raised an eyebrow.

She shrugged, patting her salt-and-pepper bob like she did when she was nervous. “I refused to have Laurence’s named on you boys’ certificates. Seems like this woman would have the biological father listed.”

“I’ll get my lawyer to get the documents. Thanks, Mama. For the advice and for making sure we had something of our father to hold on to.”

“You’re welcome, son. I should have seen this earlier.” She shook her head, distress stamped across her features. “If this boy is yours…”

“Sean.” I liked saying his name.

She smiled. “If Sean is your son, I expect to meet him soon. I got lots of hugs to make up lost time.”

My throat swelled with emotion so I simply nodded. Then, I hugged her. She smelled like she always did, and damn if I didn’t hold on a little tighter and a little longer, just to soak up some comfort.
